Standing on the quayside at Mljet, the salt air carries the distinct scent of pine and engine exhaust as the vessel approaches the pier. The southern Dalmatian coastline rises steeply from the Adriatic, a wall of jagged karst and dense green forests that makes arriving by water the only proper way to approach the region. As the ramp drops and passengers begin to shuffle aboard, I am reminded why I prefer the slow, rhythmic cadence of maritime travel over the sterile anonymity of airports and highways.
